PITCO: LAND-USE RUSH
Through September, the Pitkin County Community Development Dept. had received 212 land-use applications, compared with a total of 227 applications received in all of 2004. The rush to get an application in comes in anticipation of new land-use rules that will be likely to be presented to county commissioners in early 2006.

NW AIR SERVICE – IN QUESTION?
Airline consultant Michael Boyd says Northwest Airlines’ plans to drop its lease arrangement for 35 RJ-85 Avroliner airplanes indicates that “there’s a good possibility that you (Aspen) won’t have Northwest service this winter.” Local airport and tourism officials report that Northwest has provided assurances that the nonstop Aspen –Minneapolis and Aspen – Memphis service will be intact from December to April.

NC TELCOM BANRUPTCY
Meeker-based NC Telecom filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last Friday, unable to repay a $12 million loan from the Rural Utility Service. NC Telecom had $230,000 in prepaid services from Moffat County and the Colorado State Patrol has $277,000 in prepaid services for their offices in Craig.

IMAGINATION STATION
The Vail Recreation District Youth Services will host the grand opening of the Imagination Station on Saturday. The Imagination Station is a new museum for children ages 3 to 12 and will be open primarily on weekends and evenings. Once the ski season starts, the museum will be open in the morning for parent ski time.

FLREA: UNDER REVIEW
The Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act, which gave federal land managers permanent authority to charge fees for areas with specific amenities was included in the 2005 omnibus spending bill. The Senate will hold hearings on the FLREA on Oct. 26. State legislatures of Colorado, Montana and Oregon, along with nine county and municipal governments, have passed resolutions calling for repeal of the law.

CANCER CARING HOUSE: $50,000
The Vail Breast Cancer Awareness Group has pledged $50,000 to the Cancer Caring House, a 10,000-square-foot facility to be built next to the Shaw Regional Cancer Center in Edwards. In 2003, a $3.5 million campaign to build the Cancer Caring House was launched. The Caring House will be a place where cancer patients can stay while receiving treatment.

TECH WEEK VISITORS
Nearly 30 representatives from Western Canada and Northern Ireland are touring Colorado this week as part of Colorado Tech Week, which began Monday. Computers were Colorado’s top export to Canada in 2004, bringing in $76 million to the state. The 16-member delegation from Northern Ireland has scheduled more than 65 appointments with Colorado companies.
