ASPEN: HOT SEPT. SALES
Retail sales in Aspen in September were 15.2% higher than September 2004, with the tourist accommodations sector, the largest sector of Aspen’s retail economy, up 26.3%. For the first three quarters of the year, total retail sales are up 10.4% over the same period a year ago. September’s retail sales totaled $32.9 million; total sales for the first nine months totaled $341.8 million.

51 YEARS OF SWAPPING GEAR
The Aspen ski swap started 51 years ago, and this year’s version will be Saturday at the Aspen Middle School gym. Items can be dropped off between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. today at the middle school. About 200 volunteers run and staff the event which raises money for the Aspen School District.

RECORD DRILLING ROYALTIES
For the second year in a row, Colorado received a record royalty: $106.7 million from drilling on federal lands. The payment covers the fiscal year ended Sept. 30, with the money going to state school districts, local governments and the water conservation board.

SNOWSPORTS EXPO

MINTURN: NO VAIL PARKING
The Minturn Town Council this week rejected a proposal from Vail Resorts and Slifer, Smith and Frampton Real Estate to create a 90-space parking lot about a quarter mile south of Dowd Junction for construction employees working in Vail. The council was concerned about the lack of appropriate payment, concerns over a parking lot at the entrance to town and traffic issues.

THE COPPER LIFT OFF
Copper Mountain Resort opens today, with its first-ever, early-season festival, Lift Off. In the Lift Off four-person teams will compete to see who can ride or ski the most over the contest’s nine-day period, with the winning team awarded a heli-ski trip in British Columbia with Canadian Mountain Holidays.

SNOW SAFETY REVIEW
The U.S. Forest Service snow rangers and ski patrol leaders are conducting a snow safety plan review to evaluate how well areas are addressing wet snow, wet slab and other avalanche conditions. December 1 is the deadline for the review of all areas in the White River National Forest.

CHANGES IN LION HUNTING
The Colorado Wildlife Commission approved a new regulation requiring mandatory hunter education for mountain lion hunters. The commission also changed the lion hunting season, beginning in 2006, moving the season from the current calendar year to one that begins on the first day after the end of the fourth rifle elk season and ends on March 31. The commission also dropped the lion harvest by 10 to 557.
