DRILLING PERMITS: RECORD PACE
Through Oct. 21, the Colorado Oil and Gas Commission had approved 3,317 drilling permits. Commission staff estimate that there will be 4,150 permits issued by the end of the year, or a 42% increase over the record 2,917 permits issued last year. The record-setting pace of drilling applications/permits has forced commission staff to put off reports on public health, safety and welfare issues.

TOUGH TO FIND A ROOM
Hotels and motels in Rifle and Parachute have been full-up over the past few months with oil and gas workers, so full, in fact, that some motel operators have had to move workers out to accommodate hunters or have not booked hunters except those who made reservations as long as a year in advance. Most of the lodging properties have 50%-to-80% occupancy from oil and gas workers.

FRONTIER, INTRAWEST: DEALS
Frontier Airlines and Intrawest Corp. will again have a cooperative marketing program, with travelers who fly Frontier weekdays getting two-for-one lift tickets at Copper Mountain or Winter Park and holders of Intrawest’s Rocky Mountain Super Pass can earn Frontier frequent-flier miles by visiting Copper Mountain or Winter Park.

PAYROLLS UP: JOBLESS RATE 5%
The nation’s job market slowly regained momentum after being beaten down by Hurricane Katrina, with 56,000 jobs added in October and the unemployment dropping to 5%.

AIRLINES: HOT STOCKS???
Collectively, airlines have lost about $35 billion since 2000, but the Amex Airline index is up 24% since Sept. 21; US Airways has had a 49% increase in its stock since it was reformed with the merger of America West; Continental is up 41%; and, American is up 39%.

CALIFORNIA, BYE, BYE
Last year, 500,000 people left California for other parts of the U.S., and fewer than 400,000 moved to California. The top spots for those leaving California were Las Vegas, Phoenix, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Nashville and Oklahoma City.

GJ: NICE WEATHER FOR DUCKS
Grand Junction had 1.42 inches of precipitation in October, pushing the annual total for the first ten months of the year to 10.84 inches, 140% of normal, and the seventh-wettest year on record. The annual precipitation average for Grand Junction is 8.99 inches, and the record is 15.69 inches in 1957.

BRIGHTWATER IN GYPSUM
Gypsum, which has had a population increase of 168% in the past 15 years, could have as many as 535 new homes on 963 acres in a $950 million gated community called Brightwater Club Village. Brightwater Club is being developed by Clearwater Development Inc. and lots are priced from about $300,000.

“IMPROVED” KEYSTONE READY
Keystone Resort is ready for its 35th opening day Friday, with new snowmaking systems and trail improvements the highlight of the summer season. The resort invested $2 million in a new automated snowmaking system and also purchased 25 new airless snowmaking guns. Several popular trails, including Freda’s Way, were widened over the summer.

GETTING WELLS IN ORDER
The State Engineer’s Office will be stepping up the enforcement of well permits in Summit County this month, sending letters to property owners who are in violation of state law covering wells drawing groundwater. There are about 2,000 wells drawing groundwater in the county, and as many as 1,400 could be out of compliance.
