The Aspen Writers’ Foundation’s annual Winter Words opens today, at 5:30 p.m.
Massachusetts writer Charles C. Mann will talk about his new book, the New York Times bestseller, “1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus.”
The book shows readers that much of what Americans learn at school about America and its people are wrong! For instance, there might have been more people in the Americans than there were in Europe in 1492. Also, the American continent was populated as long as 33,000 years ago, with the world’s biggest, and most sophisticated cities. The Indians managed their environments in ways that would revolutionize today’s local agriculture. Instead of continuing to flourish, the arrival of the Europeans set off catastrophic epidemics, creating the worst demographic disaster in history.
