ESPELHO: NEW HOT SPOT
Espelho, and its 2.5-mile stretch of black-and-white sand beach in northeast Brazil, has long been a hideaway for the country’s high rollers, but now is undergoing a conversion into a tourist destination. Espelho, and nearby Trancosco, 10 miles north, are sites for US$1 billion in investments over the next three years, following on $1 billion in investment over the past decade. The investments are part of a government low-interest loan program to address the poverty and out-migration from the area, which is known for its African influences in everything from food to music. Not all locals are welcoming the outsiders, however, some restaurants still require local connections to get in and some require visitors to be accompanied by a local.
