Christian Scott Jazz Trumpeter at Summer of Jazz

One of the hotest new jazz stars to emerge in the last few years is trumpeter Christian Scott. Christian is a native of New Orleans and will no doubt make a significant impact on the future of jazz. Only 22, he is a prodigy, a natural and a huge talent. The Grammy nominated Christian Scott combines jazz and hip-hop in a smooth and sophisticated sound that is reminscent of late-1960s Miles Davis combined with some hip and hop.
“Instead, Scott has developed his own distinctive and compelling trumpet voice: a breathy tone that has more in common with the way Ben Webster played the tenor saxophone than the piercing, clarion call the trumpet usually delivers.

It took me two years of concentration to come up with that tone, says Scott, who got technique pointers from veteran horn player Clark Terry. Apparently Clifford Brown figured out a way to play the trumpet to get that sound, even though there are no recordings of him doing it. Instead of blowing cold air into the instrument, Clifford squeezed out warm air from his diaphragm that created a more breathy tone. I like it because it makes the trumpet sound like the human voice.” From Christian Scott’s Myspace Profile.

“The really amazing thing about Christian Scott, all others aside, is his ability to play rounded, almost furry notes that just don’t sound like they could come from a trumpet. And that ability allows him to bring amazing warmth to his music. As for the rest, let’s see what happens next, but I suspect a lot of people are going to be listening to this guy.”

Christian Scott and his band were amazing to listen to. I’m truly impressed that our little, free Jazz in the Park can get such an acclaimed musician. His trumpet playing along with the other musicians was truly awe-inspiring and he had a great personality. He spoke with the audience numerous times and had a great sense of humor. I hope we are fortunate enough to have him return.
