Wildfire in Canyon Creek Area
Heather | 19 June 2007
Lightning on Sunday night sparked a wildfire in the Canyon Creek area which is located between Glenwood Springs Colorado and Newcastle.
By Monday night the fire was up to about 250 acres and 30 homes along Canyon Creek were voluntarily evacuated. The winds died in the evening and overnight, bringing relief. Unfortunately the winds started picking up again today as it warmed up.
Here is a photos from Flickr that was taken last night at Sunset in Glenwood:

Right now (3:30 MST) it is gusty and the fire is actively growing. According to local news, the fire is 15% contained, approaching 400 acres and is 1/2 a mile from homes. The bad news is that it is windy and hot. The good news is that the wind is blowing to the North (apparently pushing the fire up towards the flat-tops) and the houses are to the South East.
Firefighters are currently evacuating the 60 Canyon Creeks Estate homes, bringing the total evacuations up to 90. There are currently 165 firefighters (and growing) on the scene, with helicopters and a slurry bombers actively working the fire.
