Things were already looking up for this year’s Jazz Aspen Snowmass June Festival. Then Trey Anastasio, the emperor of the jam band universe, signed on. Phish heads, start swimming upstream.
Anastasio, the former Phish frontman, joins other luminaries. Also in the hopper: Elvis Costello & the Imposters with Allen Toussaint; Costello’s wife, celestial jazz crooner Diana Krall; funk master Maceo Parker and bluesman Delbert McClinton.
So does an Anastasio appearance in Aspen mean a Phish reunion? Not so phast, says JAS executive producer Jim Horowitz. “Not here. It is not a Phish show,” Horowitz tells the Aspen Times. “I don’t think the venue is so suitable for a Phish show anyway.”

The Vail Symposium Winter 2006 Program presents the Beaver Creek Film Series this weekend.
Three films directed by David Cronenberg, the Master of the Macabre will be shown:
Dead Ringers (1998), stars Jeremy Irons, who plays the dual role of the Mantle brothers - identical twins who are both gynecologists. The more confident of the two seduces women, then tires of them and passes them on to the other brother (without her knowing). This scenario works until the shy brother falls in love first with an actress who visits their clinic.
Spider (2002), stars Ralph Fiennes, Gabriel Byrne, Miranda Richardson, and Bradley Hall.
Mr. Cleg (Fiennes), after a long stay in a psychiatric hospital, is sent to a reintegration home in his childhood neighborhood. He relives the tragedy of his childhood: His father (Byrne) murdered his mother ( Richardson) and replaced his mistress, a vulgar prostitute. Is this what really happened, or was reality even scarier?
A History of Violence (2005), stars Viggo Mortensen, Maria Bello, Ed Harris, and William Hurt.
Tom Stall is a small-town family man with a normal life - until two criminals show up at his diner and Tom takes action to thwart a robbery attempt. He is suddenly in the limelight and heralded as a hero. However, his media fame draws the attention of mobsters who arrive into town and claim that Tom is someone they have been looking for. Is this a case of mistake identity or is Tom not who he claims?
The films show at the Vilar Center for the Arts in Beaver Creek on Friday and Saturday, January 13-14.
Shows at Friday are at 6PM and 8:15 PM, and on Saturday at 6 PM.
Cost is $8 per showing or $17 for three films.
