Sunlight Mountain Resort near Glenwood Springs is offering a risk-free opportunity to try skiing or snowboarding for the first time. Free two-hour group ski lessons are available every Thursday at 10:00 a.m. throughout January 2008. This is a great way to try out the sport at no cost!

To really get the hang of skiing or snowboarding, Sunlight Mountain Resort is also introducing the Learn To Shine program for new snowriders all winter long. Learn to Shine includes three days of lift tickets, daily two-hour lessons beginning at 10:00 a.m. or 1:00 p.m., and daily equipment rentals. Learn to Shine costs $215 for skiing and $230 for snowboarding. At the end of the Learn to Shine program, graduates receive a free five-day pass to Sunlight Mountain Resort to master their new skills.

Snow riders will find the resort to be a relaxed, friendly ski area. The uncomplicated trail system features 67 runs over 470 acres that funnel back to the base lodge. There is something for everyone, including cruising corduroy, steeps, and moguls. Every trail converges at the base lodge, so family members can keep track of each other easily.

Free lessons are offered at Sunlight Ski School on January 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31 in 2008. For either program, guests should arrive one hour before scheduled lesson times if they plan to use rental equipment. Lessons are subject to availability. Sunlight Ski School operates on a first-come, first-served basis and does not take advance reservations.

Glenwood Springs Fall Fishing

Jerry Fishing in Glenwood SpringsAutumn offers some of the best fishing in Glenwood Springs and Colorado with all types of species biting best this time of year. As the days grow shorter the fish begin feeding more to prepare themselves for winter and the colder waters move the fish closer to the surface. Unfortunately, with all the recent rain it has clouded up the rivers and made it more difficult. The rain and high waters stimulate more sediment in the rivers, it gets mucky and the flies die quicker. But it can’t rain forever and a fall fishing trip is well worth your time. Prior to all the recent rain the fishing on the Colorado River from Glenwood Springs to Rifle has been spectacular, especially with the crowds depleting after Labor Day. For a current fish report visit the Colorado Division of Wildlife.

Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park - View from GondolaGot the “End of the summer” blues? Take the family on a gondola ride to the Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park at the top of Iron Mountain,  reflect on the beauty of Glenwood Springs and why we all chose to live here.

We purchased an annual family pass because it is such a great deal and we can ride the tram and experience the adventure park on a whim. A membership pass is your best buy if you’re a local or if you plan on visiting the park more than once in a year. An adult membership is only $39, children $35 and it includes unlimited tram rides and cave tours. You also receive 10 free ride tickets, 10% discount in the gift shop and restaurant, and a 30% discount on future ride tickets.

My friends, family and I regularly visit the Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park for lunch with a spectacular view and to ride the Alpine Slide – our favorite.

Yampah Spa and Vapor Caves

Yampah Vapor CavesThe Yampa Vapor Caves are underground caves formed from natural geothermal steam bathts. These naturally formed caves were first discovered by the Ute Indians and recognized for their healing properties. In fact, Yampah meant “big medicine” to the Native Americans.

The hot springs and mineral caves in Glenwood Springs are not only a prime attraction to tourists today, but were a main reason for the settlement of this city.

Glenwood Springs Yampa Vapor Caves and Spa is a recommended stop! Even if you don’t feel like getting a massage or other spa treatment, you can spend some time relaxing in the cave.
