Autumn offers some of the best fishing in Glenwood Springs and Colorado with all types of species biting best this time of year. As the days grow shorter the fish begin feeding more to prepare themselves for winter and the colder waters move the fish closer to the surface. Unfortunately, with all the recent rain it has clouded up the rivers and made it more difficult. The rain and high waters stimulate more sediment in the rivers, it gets mucky and the flies die quicker. But it can’t rain forever and a fall fishing trip is well worth your time. Prior to all the recent rain the fishing on the Colorado River from Glenwood Springs to Rifle has been spectacular, especially with the crowds depleting after Labor Day. For a current fish report visit the Colorado Division of Wildlife.

We added a Fly Fishing Access Map for the Colorado River and Roaring Fork River today to the Glenwood Blog. We also showed No Name Creek and Grizzly Creek access.
The map is provided by Community Walk and is collaborative: you can login and add comments, photos, or your own access points. Give it a go. It is interactive: you can zoom in and out, see street or satellite view. There is an export feature if you want to export the markers to Google Earth.
Our other collaborative map is a Restaurant Map and a General Glenwood Springs Map (that has hotels on it)

Maroon Bells is open to visitors
Liz | 5 June 2006 1 Review »
The Maroon Bells opened up on May 26th, 2006 and if you have visitors coming in from out of town, or are planning to head over the Maroon Bells this summer to hike or take in a driving tour, be aware that the area has limited access by car from June through September.
From mid June, during the main part of the day, you will need to take a bus tour. Tours leave the Aspen Highlands ski area every 20 minutes from 9:05 am to 2:05 pm and then every hour and half until 4:30pm, last bus leaves at 5:00pm. If you are visiting the area from 7am – 9 am or from 5pm – 7pm then you can access the area with a $10 recreation use fee.
The area has been closed to private vehicles during the peak times of the day since 2000 because of the build up of pollution on the mountain. The aspen and the wildflowers, the reason everyone loves to travel to the area, were choking from all the pollution from the vehicles.
All non-motorized forms of transportation can go through at no charge at anytime. On the bus tours you can bring along Fido, so long he stays on the leash at all times and you keep him on the trails and be aware he can’t go swimming in the lakes.
Check out the Forest Service site for downloadable trail guides before heading out. There is something for everyone and every ability, such as the Maroon Lake Scenic trail an easy 1.5 mile (one way) trail that takes you across creeks, around an active beaver pond and loops back around the lake. You can turn back at any point to head back to the trailhead.

Over the next few weeks, Colorado Division of Wildlife personnel will stock the largest number of kokanee salmon in seven years - nearly 700,000 more than a year ago.
This turn marks a continued recovery from egg-collection problems of recent years and, given proper survival and growth conditions, an ultimate boost in angler success. The fry range in size from 1 to 2 inches. (more…)
