X GAMES: RECORD BOOKINGS
The 10th version of the Winter X Games begin in Aspen this weekend, and virtually every bed of the 14,800 available beds in Aspen/Snowmass is booked for Friday night. According to Bill Tomcich, president of Stay Aspen Snowmass, the resort’s central reservation agency, “This Friday night we are facing the biggest single sell-out in my 11 years here.”

The Roaring Fork Valley received another big night of snow on Wednesday night as more than a foot fell on all four Aspen Ski Company mountains. The storm pushed the area to 130 percent of average snowfall after several years of falling short of 100 percent by February. NWC forecaster Mike Chamberlain attributed the recent dumps on the fact that the storms are coming out of the Northwest United States and striking Colorado’s northern and central mountains. The southern part of the state has not fared as well - Durango is at 47 percent of normal. (more…)

MORATORIUM IN GLENWOOD?
The Glenwood Springs City Council voted unanimously Thursday to draft an ordinance for City Council consideration in February that would place a moratorium on all new development on the south side of the city for six months to study future sewer, transit and transportation needs.

SILVERTREE SOLD?
One of Snowmass Village’s oldest and largest properties, the 260-room Silvertree Hotel, the 160-room Wildwood Lodge and the Snowmass Conference Center, is under contract for sale to a group of local investors, including Basalt developers Jim Light and Jim Chaffin. The investors have recently purchased the Snowmass Center and much of the Snowmass Mall.

OIL SHALE COMPANIES SELECTED
The Bureau of Land Management Tuesday selected six companies, from a pool of 16, for experimental oil shale projects in Colorado and Utah, pending environmental reviews. In Colorado, Shell Frontier Oil & Gas Co., Chevron Shale Oil Co., EGL Resources Inc. and Exxon Mobil Corp. won tentative approval.

GLENWOOD SALES SOAR
Sales tax revenues in Glenwood Springs in November totaled $998,263, up a whopping 33% over the $747,872 in November 2004. The city’s lodging tax, which generates funds for tourism promotion, had $30,298 in collections, up from $25,284 in November 2004. Overall, sales tax collections for the first 11 months of 2005 were almost 9% higher than the corresponding period in 2004.
